BACKGROUND:

John's world is very much like normal Earth, aside from some very specific and interesting paranormal activity. Several decades before he was born a man named Alexander Volks was in a tree reading a book on the occult when his younger sister, Gigi Volks, tried to climb up to join him. She fell and died.

He panicked, and took her down into some caves where there was a special hole in the ground sealed up. He cast an occult spell in an attempt to bring her back to life, but instead her soul became a ghost and he became partially possessed by a demon. Alexander wasn't particularly aware of either result.

Later in life he founded and ran the Volks Corporation, which produced a lot of technology, power generators, weapons, etc. In the early 2000's Thomas Bryson was sent in by a military counter intelligence unit to work undercover and look for signs that Volks was developing biological or chemical weapons.

In 2005, he sent word that he'd found something, and civilian John Raimi, who worked with the CR-2 unit, was sent in. John was an expert on chemical and biological weapons, as well as experienced in counter-terrorism and data gathering procedures. Bryson had been his friend since college, and John was more than happy to go in to help him.

The military insertion into the Volks facility went off smoothly, and John had the data he needed before any Volks para-military showed up. However, his team had to fight its way out. At one point they were attacked by a weird demonic creature that killed a member of the squad. Right as they made it to the helicopter for extraction, Bryson became possessed and killed everyone but John.

John was taken prisoner and used as a test subject in the soul separation. His soul was separated from his body by a large machine over the hole mentioned earlier that was now no longer sealed. John, now a ghost, was contained and placed into a simulator that was supposed to brainwash him and turn him into a nice operative.

It was a very pleasant place, a nice green field with plans for him to absorb energy from and small animals for him to possess and run around as. All was well, until the system malfunctioned and the illusion was revealed. John realized he was stuck in a simulation, and thanks to the ghost of a small girl, he was able to escape.

The young girl, introducing herself as Gigi, taught John how to be a ghost, and used a mirror to show him what he looked like. While Gigi looked the way she had in life, right down to her dress and favorite teddy bear she always carried with her, John merely had the outline of a human, glowing eyes, and strange glowing, sparking energy inside what would have been his chest. The differences were because of the manner in which the ghosts were created; Gigi became a ghost after dying, but John's body was still alive, although he didn't know that at the time.

After possessing someone that worked in the facility and learning that Bryson was alive and scheduled to be separated, John set out to free him. He managed to destroy the separation machine by utilizing a laser used in the procedure to destroy important equipment - after the rift was destabilized he shut down the power reactor. In a desperate attempt to keep it open, Commander Rourke, Volks' head of military, a mercenary, and Volks' right hand man, ordered the tech people to try to keep the rift open. Unfortunately this let a massive demon through that none of the humans could see and the rift closed anyway.

The demon, which had partially possessed Volks so many years, took complete possession of him.

Raimi found himself possessing a female Doctor that had been treating Bryson, and found he needed to be given a special serum via IV or he would die. John managed to get her past guards and other security to the serum, and then give it to Bryson before it was too late.

After Bryson woke up, a guard came upon the two of them. Bryson managed to kill him, and John took the soldier's equipment and clothes and put the female doctor in them. Now armed, the two set out to escape. Bryson was swallowed by a demon after they went up an elevator, and John had to kill it. After it died Bryson came out of it, still alive. John left him in a secure location to scout ahead, and they arranged for a hand sign for John to use to signal Bryson if he had to take over a new body.

John managed to get to the communications area, and met back up with Bryson, he also found out that his body was still alive, he got the frequency to contact extraction and found a new body with clearance to get to the heliport. Unfortunately, that body died shortly after its usefulness was outlived, and John possessed a number of inanimate objects to get Bryson past considerable guard resistance.

There was also a motorcycle chase, where John possessed the motorcycle and a few other vehicles.

At the location where the helicopter was to pick them up, they discovered a problem. There were anti-air missile units all around, and the helicopter could not receive their signal and be warned of danger. John possessed some people and machines and destroyed the anti-air missiles and the helicopter landed to pick Bryson up. John stayed behind to try to locate his body, and Bryson said he understood why John needed to stay.

John's body, possessed by someone else, watched the entire affair and shot the helicopter with a rocket launcher. John gave chase, but whatever was in his body had given it super speed and the ability to jump really high. John's host died and he wandered around for a while before stumbling on the remnants of the mansion Gigi and Alexander had lived in as children.

Gigi explained how she came into existence and about the bad voice and the bad thing that had come out of the rift, and how she was worried about her brother and that they needed to save him. She then showed John how to get back into the facility.

There he ran into a bunch of soldiers that moved at ghost-speeds and could shoot him while he didn't have a host. He got captured again shortly there-after.

John was put into another brainwashing simulation that trained him on how to attack a UN summit, kill guards, kill dignitaries, and then to take over his assigned dignitary. Before the machine could continue, the power went out, demons attacked, and John was free again.

He took over an engineer that had been frightened by the appearance of the Demons, and in the engineer's recent memories saw that Volks had called a special meeting and ordered a specific meeting room to be cleared out. John needed to restore the power to get to that room, so it was back to the generator area. This time it was infested with demons he had to kill with a bolt gun (shooting little metal bolts at them, fun). He got to the engine room and started to restart the engines, but a large demon attacked.

John killed it with the bolt gun, and restored power. He then went to three scientists that were arguing about who made the better weapon. He abandoned the engineer and scared them all with robotic arms. They all ran into separate rooms, and he went and looked around and picked the one with the weapon he liked the best and scared him.

The scientist and the weapon he took over to the command wing, but he couldn't get directly into the room, and wound up underground. There he fought another demon. At the end the demon crashed into a wall conveniently opening a crack that took John to where he needed to go. He watched Volks, possessed by a large demon, give a speech to a bunch of other operatives and a demon of some kind in John's body.

John chased after his body, but couldn't get to it because only two people, Volks and Rourke, were allowed in the area. John learned Rourke was incredibly afraid of dogs, and set out to find the one dog that apparently didn't bark and get upset at his presence. John possessed the dogs handler and walked the dog up to where Rourke waited. Rourke freaked out and shot at the dog and lost his gun in his panic, leaving John free to take over his body.

Once in possession of Rourke, John went over to the area he saw his body walk into, and as Rourke was given special Spirit Hunter armor and a special gun that launched special grenades that would force a Ghost out of its Host and damage ghosts without hosts.

Then he used Rourke to kill a bunch of Rourke's men and chased after his body. When he finally caught up with his body, the demon that had possessed it dropped his body under a piece of giant machinery held up by a crane and left it. John left Rourke's body to save his own, and while he was gone the demon took over Rourke to try to kill John and his body.

John killed Rourke using the gun, and the demon using the grenades. His body also had the spirit hunter armor on it. Now he just needed to find Volks and get rid of Volks' demon. He needed to stop the spectral operatives from being sent to a UN meeting in Paris, so he shot down the helicopters carrying the spirit operatives, then killed the spirit operatives with special grenades.

John made his way to where Volks was, which required fighting two giant statues possessed by something. After they were beaten, John encountered Volks in the next room. Volks was floating around the room in a fancy wheel chair that had machine guns and fired explosives. Volks, now completely demon, talked about how easily humanity destroyed itself, and that John had only delayed the apocalypse. The world would still end and demons would have a new paradise with Volks' demon as its ruler.

After John killed Volks Gigi showed up and approached her brother's body. A giant demon arm reached out and grabbed her. John got partially down on the ground and left his body to follow.

There he saw a young Alexander sitting in a replica of the big hole with a rift area the way it had been when he'd been a child. Sealed and secured. Then John fought the big demon that was inside Volks, and managed to defeat it. After it was dead, the ghosts of John, Gigi, and a young Alexander all left the body. Alexander was finally free from possession for the first time since before he hit puberty, and Gigi and Alexander happily played together. Gigi bid John goodbye and they both left.

John hopped back in his body and fled the collapsing chamber. Just when he thinks all is lost and he's stranded, Bryson shows up along with the female doctor he'd possessed earlier and the dog that didn't hate ghosts. They all left and presumably lived happily ever after. Except this is the part where John gets ported in.

PERSONALITY:

John Raimi is a very dedicated individual, and a very loyal friend. He worked as a civilian with a military Counter Terrorism unit as their expert on chemical and biological weapons, and willingly went into dangerous situations for the sake of others.

He shows a lot of mental resilience when he is separated from his body and manages to retain his sanity - most other people that went through the experiment went mad and lost themselves. John manages to retain memories of who he was, what he was doing before he was separated from his body, and his friends. He demonstrates a great ability to adapt to adverse situations by quickly learning how to utilize and deal with his new abilities and weaknesses as a ghost. He's very capable of putting stressful situations

John also demonstrates a lot of creativity and improvisation with his ghost powers in finding new and inventive ways to scare people and animals enough that he can possess them. Between using telephones, fire extinguishers, dog food, ladders, shower heads, mirrors, and even complex machinery he never has to repeat a scare tactic.

Problem solving is another area where John excels, as he always manages to find a way to get past obstacles utilizing a variety of solutions as ghost or a variety of hosts.

John also demonstrates a very strong friendship with Bryson, to the point that he's able to convince Bryson of who he is even while possessing another human. There's a strong level of trust between the two, with John initially placing his trust in Bryson as the more experienced soldier and combatant when they're still alive, to Bryson trusting John to help him and keep him safe when the latter is stuck as a ghost without any human bodies to inhabit and only inanimate objects to use to keep Bryson safe. He doesn't make too many friends, but the ones John does make, he keeps for a very long time.

He's a fairly serious, focused guy when on the job, and he's very good at concentrating on what he's doing. John can come off as a little too intense and focused at doing what he needs to get done. While off work or relaxing, by contrast, he's a pretty laid back guy and generally goes with the flow. His hobbies tend to be things that are likewise pretty laid back, the occasional game, messing with electronics. He'll occasionally go for a game of sports of some kind with friends but more for the physical exercise and hanging out with friends than the sport itself, and he does work to stay in good shape.

While he used to be skeptical about the supernatural as a man that was very firmly grounded in science, his time as a ghost and the time spent fighting demonic creatures certainly left him more open-minded and willing to believe things that seem strange or impossible, and that will no doubt help him cope with being transported to the City.

John is also a tech person; he always carries his PDA and other high tech equipment with him whenever possible, and his understanding of technology was also very useful during his time as a ghost, when he was able to interact with technology directly. He's the kind of guy that likes to have the latest and most cutting-edge technology.

POWER:

Turning Into a Ghost - This is John's primary and really his only power, and he's not a very good ghost at that. He cannot fly, though he can hover about ten feet off the ground for a short period of time, gravity does apply to him when he's a ghost. Likewise he can't move through solid objects like walls, he can't open doors (though he can slip through tiny cracks, and wire fences of any kind are easy for him to move through). It does take an opening a few inches in diameter all the way through, so unless a normal door is damaged or misaligned it'll be impossible for him to get through without a host. Also, for some reason, John cannot possess doors.

When he becomes a ghost he leaves his body behind, comatose and unprotected. While he's in ghost form he more or less moves in bullet time, but he can only spend about 20 minutes outside of a Host of some kind. This is 20 minutes of real time, so as a Ghost moving at about half the speed that the average bullet does he can do a lot in that time. He perceives the world completely in gray/blue tones aside from living beings, and can drain energy from plants to prolong the time he can spend outside a body.

John is also invisible to most people. Generally, only other ghosts and demons can see him, but there are probably other people.

Possession -

While he's a ghost, John can possess a variety of things, from inanimate objects, to animals, to humans. Inanimate objects are fairly easy. He can take control of things only up to a certain size, though. Motorcycles and small cars are good for him, but anything getting bigger than an SUV he can't control. At most he'd be able to possess part of the car, like the engine, and start it and make it move, but he wouldn't be able to steer it at all.

He can control portions of larger things than he can possess, at one point he possesses some robotic arms attached to a larger device and makes the arms go nuts. Aside from that he can possess a wide variety of things, though he can generally only move things if they have a shape conducive to movement. He can roll cans of soda and small round things but can't move a box hardly at all, and the most he can do with a ladder is make it fall over.

Mirrors, faucets, dog food, fire extinguishers, computers, lights, and even bed sheets are all fair game for him. He is unable to possess guns, but grenades and other explosives are fair game for him.

Animals and people are much more difficult for John to possess. They have to either be willing to let him in or so scared they're in some kind of panic. Animals are naturally easier to scare, and people vary in what sends them into the right state of mind for John to enter them. Comatose bodies or bodies that are brain dead can be easily possessed by John, but simply being asleep or knocked out isn't enough to give him control. (Obviously there'll be permissions involved when John will be possessing a person, and possibly with animals if the situation requires it).

When he possesses a person there's a chance he may gain some of their recent memories (permissions again), and he'll be able to make them do things that are very familiar to them (operate a weapon, start an IV, use heavy machinery that requires training), but only if it's something they do regularly or trained on for a long time.

After he departs a possessed person they have no memory of what they did while he possessed them.
